My work of the last year has been mainly multimedia-digital photography and single-channel video works. I focus on the urban environment, as it is saturated with imagery that conceals as much as it reveals. I notice and transform aspects of scenes ever present, but often passed by. Recently, I have begun to focus on the lights of the city. In Untitled2, I filmed the streetlights while riding the El, and have edited the work to create an organic ambiance attempting to link the composition of lights to stars shining in the night sky. I try to transform quotidian experiences to produce a visceral, uncanny tension in the viewer. While focusing on the urban environment, I try to notice how particular scenes or images can elicit associations with archetypal figures in the collective imagination. For example, in Untitled(constellation), I animated the trajectories of airplanes flying overhead until they converge into scenes of familiar constellations. The archetypal quality in the work exists for just a moment, a coincidence of forces that may be noticed when following a thread of movement through the city. Digital media is essential in bringing a new sense of meaning to our environment, because the work can displace us in an environment that we are familiar with. My work explores an area between the familiar and the fantastic. I have found inspiration in the thematically similar literature of writers in the magical realist genre. I notice and appreciate the very imaginative and structured character of the written work of Borges, Calvino, Perec, Levi and others. I find that the use of structure in their texts (by categories like the stages of life, aspects of the city, the periodic table) puts their stories in relation to each other, accentuating the play between them into one aesthetic, rather than feeling like imposed or arbitrary artifice. I try to find a similar structuring thematic both to contextualize the works, and to draw them into conversation with each other. Working within the categories of cycles, reflections, and illuminations, I am developing an eccentric portrait of the cycle of light in the city.
