| The Englert Theater has been an institution in my former home of Iowa City since the 1920s. Constructed in 1916, the theater was completely rebuilt after being ravaged by fire in 1926. In the years since, it has been host to traveling vaudeville shows and off broadway productions and most recently, a movie house; when in 1986 a giant wall was built down the center isle to allow two films to be shown at a time. In 2001 the Englert closed for business, was purchased by a local preservation committee, and soon after I was requested to document the theater in its pre-renovation state. Here you'll find a selection of those photographs. The black and white images were taken in dive bars, flea markets and abandoned buildings along the Mississippi river. |
