"Art gives us a voice to express ourselves in a way words may not convey or when they may not be appropriate. Art helps to connect us to history, to other cultures and shows the correlation between past and present. Art is powerful in that it can be appealing in an aesthetic sense and at the same time provoke thought and/or make a statement, making it useful. That inspires me to throw caution to the wind and make art that I want to look at. and is relevant to me and those like me."
Biography: Mick Reaves is a painter, illustrator, and designer currently residing and working out of NYC/Northern NJ. A Chicago, Ill. native, Mr. Reaves grew up in Montclair, NJ developing a passion for art in early childhood. That passion would continue to grow over the years, culminating in his recent emergence on the fine art scene. The artist’s portfolio includes commissioned art, freelance graphics and illustration work, portraits, and he has also designed t-shirts for fashion labels. Here is some of that work with more to come shortly.
Mick's fresh and innovative style of painting is a mixture of pop art, surrealism and is heavily influenced by graphic design, comic book art and graffiti with topics ranging from social issues to the realities and complexities of life. Though largely self taught, Mick has studied art at The Yard School Of Art, Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA, The New School For Social Research in NYC, and at New Jersey City University where he is currently completing his bachelor of fine arts/art teacher certification.
